Volcanoes National Park
Deep within the misty peaks of northwestern Rwanda lies a place of ancient wonder. Volcanoes National Park is a sanctuary for the soul. It is part of the Great Virunga Conservation Area. Furthermore, it serves as the final stronghold for the endangered mountain gorilla. At All Seasons Adventures, we believe this park offers Africa’s most intimate wildlife encounter.

A Land of Giants
The park is defined by five of the eight volcanoes in the Virunga Mountains. These include Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo. In addition, the park is covered in rich rainforest and bamboo. This lush vegetation provides the perfect habitat for primates.
Karisimbi is the highest peak, reaching 4,507 meters. It often features a white cap of snow or hail. Moreover, the park’s elevation creates a cool, refreshing climate. This is a welcome change from the heat of the African savanna.
The Legacy of Dian Fossey
You cannot visit this park without honoring Dian Fossey. She was a pioneer in gorilla conservation. Furthermore, she established the Karisoke Research Center in 1967. Her work changed how the world views mountain gorillas.
Today, her legacy lives on through the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. Additionally, visitors can hike to her former research site. It is a moving tribute to a woman who gave her life for these giants.
Gorilla Trekking
Gorilla trekking is the primary draw for most travelers. However, it is much more than a simple hike. It is a spiritual connection with our closest relatives.
The Trekking Process
The day begins at the Kinigi park headquarters. First, you will be assigned to a specific gorilla family. Next, your lead ranger will provide a safety briefing. You will learn how to behave around the gorillas. Then, the hike begins.
The Encounter
Treks can last between two and six hours. Eventually, you will find the family. You are allowed exactly one hour in their presence. During this time, you can watch them eat, play, and groom. It is a silent, breathtaking experience. Consequently, most travelers describe it as life-changing.
Beyond the Gorillas
While gorillas get the headlines, the Golden Monkeys are equally captivating. These primates are endemic to the Virunga massifs. Furthermore, they are incredibly playful and fast-moving.
They live in the bamboo forests at the base of the volcanoes. As a result, the trek to find them is usually shorter and less taxing. Their golden coats shimmer against the green leaves. They are very used to human presence. This makes for incredible photography opportunities.

Challenging the Peaks
For those seeking physical adventure, the park offers world-class hiking. All Seasons Adventures provides expert guides for every trail.
Mount Bisoke (3,711m)
This is our most popular day hike. It features a stunning crater lake at the summit. However, the trail is steep and can be muddy. The round trip takes about six hours, and the views from the top are spectacular.
Mount Karisimbi (4,507m)
This is a two-day expedition. It requires a high level of fitness. First, you will camp at 3,700 meters. Then, you summit on the second morning. It is a challenging climb. Nevertheless, standing on the highest peak in Rwanda is an unmatched feeling.
The Twin Lakes
Just outside the park boundaries lie the Twin Lakes. They were formed by volcanic eruptions from Mount Muhabura. Consequently, they are surrounded by dramatic hills and deep blue water.
We recommend a boat cruise on these lakes. In addition, it is a great way to interact with local fishing communities. The scenery is perfect for sunset photography. Therefore, it is the best way to unwind after a long day of trekking.

Essential Preparation and Packing
Success in the rainforest depends on your gear. Therefore, you must pack wisely.
What to Pack
- Long Trousers and Sleeves: These protect you from stinging nettles.
- Gaiters: They keep ants and mud out of your boots.
- Gardening Gloves: You will often grab branches for support. Consequently, gloves are essential.
- Waterproof Jacket: It can rain at any moment in the Virungas.

Physical Fitness
Trekking happens at high altitudes. Thus, you may feel breathless more easily. We suggest light cardio training before your trip. Also, remember to stay hydrated.
Sustainability and Conservation
At All Seasons Adventures, we take conservation seriously. A portion of every permit fee goes to local communities. Furthermore, this funding supports schools and hospitals.
By visiting, you are actively protecting the gorillas. In the past, poaching was a major threat. Today, the population is slowly increasing. This is because tourism provides a sustainable alternative for the local economy.
